announced Feb. 6, 2007.

Here is the article from the BBC:

MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR - CHRIS THILE

The sole American on this year's nominations list, 25-year-old Chris Thile (pronounced Thee-lee) is now regarded as the greatest mandolin player in the
world. He started playing the instrument at the age of five and recorded his first album when he was 13, but came to international attention in the progressive
bluegrass band...

what about Grisman? It's easy for the mandolin world to confuse talent with speed. What touches ones heart is considered "The Best" of anything.
I cant see where a specific organization can claim any best of anything, its just a giant acclimation of admiration on the part of that group. The crappy part
of all this is whenever Thile walks in some place, everyone will expect him to be the best, that's a big bag of bricks to carry around.

I've got his "Mastering the Mandolin" book (which comes with a CD) and it's pretty good -- for U.S. players his use of British folk tunes and

I'd strongly recommend his book of original tunes (in standard notation and tab) called "The New Mandolin". Written specially for the mandolin,

I'd have to nominate Simon Mayor, a British player who plays mostly folk but also shines in other genres including some classical, so he's got a good
range, his mandolin playing has a gorgeous warm tone, and he plays a mean fiddle and guitar too. His own albums of original compositions are, for me, more
compelling and more "listenable" than Thile's solo output ("How to Grow a Woman from the Ground" was just odd). Plus, Mayor is married
to singer Hilary James...

I agree that Chris Thile is a great technician, but his music (what I've heard of it) doesn't seem to do anything for me. I love Sam bush's
playing; who I'm really digging now are Don Stiernberg(jazz & "standards"), Patrick Vaillant(French), Evan Marshall(duo style master), &
dead guys like Yank Rachell(blues) & Dave Appollon(probably THE greatest mandolin virtuoso of the 20th century).
