Drop-in replacement tuners for Quartz |
Lead | ||

I'd like to upgrade the tuners on my Quartz 00. Does anyone know if Schallers and/or Grovers will drop right in? I don't want to have to do any
redrilling/boring except for the mounting screws. So I guess it comes down to the width of the posts and their spacing. Thanks!

I talked with a gentleman at Breedlove this morning about replacing the stock tuners on a Quartz with Schallers. He said that they would drop right in but not
to change the bushings. Apparently the Schaller bushings have a larger OD that would require a larger hole but the ID is the same. We'll see.

Ok,
Here is what I found out. I initially ordered a set of Grover nickel A tuners last week. I received those and took my original tuners off my Quartz. The Grovers will slide right in using the original bushings on the mando BUT, the only screw holes that line up are the three in the middle. No problem, just re-tap the other two holes right? Wrong because the Grover tuner is too long for the headstock. It hangs off the bottom of the headstock about a 16th of an inch, bummer! So I returned those and purchased a set of Schaller nickel A's. By the way, I looked at Stew-Mac extensively after this because they give the exact specs of each tuner on their site, and I could see the difference in the length of the two sets. I wish I had done this first. The Schallers arrived Saturday. They drop right in the holes just like the Grovers except this time all the holes line up except the top one which is just about an 8th off. But the top of the tuner covers the old hole so I simply just tapped a new hole for the top screw and presto, it looks like it came from Breedlove this way. Great! I hope this will help anyone else looking to upgrade the cheap tuners that come on the Quartz series. I mean for $45 (FQM), this is such a simple and quality upgrade to your mando that takes only 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Thanks for the information. I have been thinking about changing mine, but mostly because I would like different buttons. Have you had any experience just
changing the buttons?

No, I have never figured out how, or tried to change the buttons on Schallers. That is one reason I always liked the Grovers because the buttons are held on by
a screw.

Thanks for posting on this subject. I asked this question back in August, but never got an answer that worked for me. Now that I know the schallers will work I
can reconsider installing an Allen tailpiece and an after market bridge. What is FQM.. is that where you found your tuners?
