Saying hello |

Like some other members of every guitar forum, I have been slow to introduce myself and it's time that I rectify that oversight. I am a retired university
professor/administrator who has been playing guitar off and on for more than 50 years. I am self-taught, for the most part, with lots of very bad playing
habits that seem to persist no matter how hard I try to substitute more effective techniques. (I'll never learn to play an A chord with my ring finger
barring three strings at the second fret, for example. 50 years of doing it a different way is more than I can overcome.) My musical tastes run from country to
folk with a recent dash of old time and bluegrass mixed in. I've always been a strummer and now aspire to finger pick in the Travis tradition and flatpick
ala Steve Kaufman. I have a room full of wonderful guitars that exceed my playing ability by a wide margin, but I love to hold, stroke and smell guitars - so I
just keep buying them. My latest itch has been to own a few nice sunburst guitars - I just added a gorgeous Santa Cruz H-13 sunburst, for example. I spend far
too much time watching guitar auctions on e-Bay and logging in to guitar forums on-line. I should be practicing! Thanks for letting me interact with you via
the BGMF.

Welcome, what all guitars do you have? I've only got 43 years of playing under my belt. You'd think I'd be able to play almost anything; not so.
The barred A chord has some definite advantages. I use that approach with Barre chords.
At any rate, welcome. -Lee (Bend, OR)

I've been known to play with the following: D-18 : D-18V : Backpacker : 000-28EC : D-41 : Breedlove OM-M : Gibson C-0 Classic : Martin D12-1 : and a '98 Harley-Davidson FLTR Road Glide ************* Hand me my old guitar, pass the whisky round. Won't you tell everybody you meet that the Candyman's in town. -Hunter/Garcia |

Great to see you here Norseman, and I hope you will stick around!
"I'll never learn to play an A chord with my ring finger barring three strings at the second fret" Me either. I have never been able to do those "broken finger" partial barre chords. "I spend far too much time watching guitar auctions on e-Bay and logging in to guitar forums on-line. I should be practicing! " Oh yeah, we have this in common... I also love buying/selling and especially trading guitars with other players/enthusiasts. Trying new and different guitars is just plain fun. You'll get along with Ragtime Man - he's a bluezy, ol'time music man, and I bet he'll be chiming in soon. Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a

Welcome to the Board! I too have instruments that are quality well beyond my ability, but someone once told me "you will only ever play up to the quality
of your instrument"...I believe that, so I buy good instruments in the hope that one day my ability will reach their level.
Hope to hear from you often in the discussions. --Michael

I was once told by a guitar teacher that he could not work with me on some things I wanted to learn. His reason was I had to many "bad habits."
Being self taught also I thought I was doing OK with my progress. That was years ago and I have found that I learn more just by playing and being around other
guitar players. Open mike nights are just one place to meet musicans that are begging to get together just to jam. The lead guitar player in my band gets on me
all the time because of my odd fingering and such but after a good gig he always gives a pat on the back and says "good job even if you can't do it
like me!" Travis picking is awsome. One of my favorites is Guy Clark . Also Norman Blake. Check out Tim May for some awsome flat picking. Oh yeah.
Welcome aboard.

Lee asked what guitars I have. The most noteworthy, in my opinion, include the Breedlove CM Classic I recently posted for sale, my 1940 Gibson L-7 natural
archtop (my birth year guitar), a custom Rockbridge 000BZ, a Larrivee OMV-10K, a Martin 00-18H Muldaur, a Huss and Dalton CM Custom sunburst, a Goodall RP-12
and the Santa Cruz H-13 I mentioned earlier. I have some others as well, but these are the ones I play the most often and enjoy the most. Thanks for asking.

One of my favorites is Guy ClarkGreg - GC is great. I'm covering "The Cape" at a gig on May 10th (informal Beer Garden concert). Some mighty fine axes mentioned there! I also have a Goodall RP-14, well sort of . . . long story with that one. Rockbridge Guitars are made just down the road from me, but I've yet to run across one. How do you like yours? Power and Wisdom, I like the Rockbridge just fine. It's special to me and my wife because we got to work with Brian Calhoun designing the inlay work.
He's a great guy who is willing to build guitars that reflect the owner's background and history. We visited his shop in Gordonsville and got to pick
out the old growth Brazilian back and sides for my guitar from his private stash. Later, when the guitar was ready for pick up, we drove to Lexington and met
Randall Ray at his shop back in the woods. These experiences make the guitar all the more special to us. As for the sound and playability, I'm satisfied,
but not overwhelmed. It's meant to emulate a Gibson and I favor a somewhat different sound - Santa Cruz comes closer to satisfying my preferences. I chose
a red spruce top and some guys say they take awhile to decide they're no longer a tree. I probably don't play it enough to help it open up, but
it's going to go to one of my grandkids some day so he or she will have a very special guitar with a meaningful history. I have similar feelings about my
Huss and Dalton having been to Staunton and met the folks who build them. I like the idea of meeting the people who built my guitars, especially those who live
within a few hours of where I live. Wouldn't it be great to do the same with a Henderson guitar built in Rugby, VA by Wayne himself!!! Larry

The Cape is a great song. I cover LA Freeway once in a while. If you've never seen it get a movie called Heartworn Highways. It's about up and comming
musicians in their early days like Townes VanZandt, John Haitt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle and the list goes on and on. It's filmed almost like a home movie.
GOOD STUFF!

Great stuff Larry. It seems we're gathering quite a flock of luthiers here in the Old Dominion. I would LOVE to one day own a Huss & Dalton. Trouble
is, Jeff (Omegaman here on the forum) keeps buying them all. Be patient with that red spruce top - they do take some time to "play in."
Greg - I'll definitely check out that movie. Thanks for the tip! Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a

Here is the link to photos of the H/D. My photos aren't very good and I'm still buffaloed by the process of showing the photos here as opposed to
making you cut and past the URL. Sorry. Larry http://s216.photobucket.com/albums/cc7/norseman40/Huss%20and%20Dalton%20CM/

That may very well be the darkest burst that I've ever seen. It goes really well with the natural sides/back.

The comment about the Huss and Dalton being a dark sunburst motivated me to take this group photo. You're right, Mac, it's the darkest of the lot.

That is the nicest burst family shot I have ever seen. SCGC's galore. And that iced tea Guild, how purty! What is that one on the top left?
Thanks for killing me today. (This topic was split to the Boutique Section as well, because of it's informative nature about other makers of import to the Boutique Section.)
