He is truely one of the greats. His skill level is sickening and he makes it look so easy. His slide looks homemade to me...

Friggin Bill Murray! The Mahi Mahi orchestra! Now that's funny! Oh yeah, those other two guys weren't bad either.

Oh that was a great vid and would have watched it again if I wasn't so darn busy right now. And to me it looked like school was in session for a bit with
Mr. Clapton the way he was watchin Sonny do that voodoo he do so well.

He is a brilliant comedian, but it seems like there are times when he feels like he needs to be "on", and it's almost like he presses a little too hard. It doesn't come out naturally. He's still one of my favorites though. PR "All Music is the Blues. All of it!" --- George Carlin

Fingerpicker wrote: Thats what I was thinking too, for a while. Watching it a second, (& third) time one notices the sublte mastery of Clapton. One can see how he earned his slowhand nickname. I think It is just somewhat shadowed by the explosive slide work of Sonny in this performance. It even looks like Eric noticed this as well, Sonny came to play.. |

Tommie wrote:Uh, sorry. Nope. He did not earn his nickname because of his playing. Its easy to understand how so many of us could think that. But E.C. earned the nicname "slowhand" from his manager at the time. When he would break a string, the audience would start a slow hand clap as he was changing it. Here is how E.C. is quoted; "My nickname of Slowhand came from Giorgio Gomelsky. He coined it as a good pun. He kept saying I was a fast player, so he put together the slow handclap phrase into Slowhand as a play on words." I was going to use that as one of my "contest" questions, but decided against it at the last minute. Sort of the opposite of a moniker or handle. Teachers in school probably give out more nicknames unintentionaly to poor students with the slip of a tongue. Just like that the kid has a new nickname for life. Anyways that is sort of cool about Mr. Clapton, never knew how he was labeled such. Thanks Tele. Thanks MS. I will check it out. I know it's blasphemy, but I don't worship at the altar of slowhand. Probably why I haven't seen it yet. Before
the flaming starts, I acknowledge that he is really good. I just don't get him I guess.

Everytime I see a Sonny video it astounds me what he is doing and the how laid back he is doing it. Not putting on a show or pretending, he is just in his element. Just throwing up an idea on the Sonny vs Clapton showdown on this vid. First, I'm not familiar with the song. Is this a Sonny original?
This reminds me of a quote by John Coltrane when talking about his performance on Giant Steps. This song is regarded as (arguably) the most difficult jazz song to play. In the song he has a solo that completely annihilates his piano player McCoy Tyner. Tyner was chosen to play this song because he was regarded, at the time, as one of the best improvisational pianists out there. When you listen to the song, you can hear him struggling to keep up. Coltrane just floats in and out of his solo and hammers nails in Tyner's coffin over and over. I have seen sheet music that notates Coltranes solo, and it is hard to read while the song is going on, much less play. It is genius (imho). Anyway, someone asked Coltrane about how fluid and perfect his solo is on such a difficult (and fast) chord progression. Apparently he laughed and said that what most people don't understand was that he had been practising that solo for two years while he was composing the song. That would explain it. My point is that if this is a Sonny original, he should be able to take anyone to school in a showdown. Anybody except Esteban maybe

Portland Rain wrote:This is the most difficult aspect of music to understand. (for us mere mortals anyway) I don't remember who said it, but I think it was Miles, or maybe John McLaughlin. Here I paraphrase; "The thing about music is, you have to learn everything. And then when you play, you have to forget everything you've learned. That's when it really starts to flow. That's when you are at your highest level. The direct connection between your soul, and your music." Thats exactly where I strive to be.
