Portland Rain wrote:Great story PR, I'm not sure if Sonny wrote the song, maybe someone could verify. I am guessing that if he didn't write it, he practiced the !@$* out of that arrangement of it.
Just throwing up an idea on the Sonny vs Clapton showdown on this vid. First, I'm not familiar with the song. Is this a Sonny original?
This reminds me of a quote by John Coltrane when talking about his performance on Giant Steps. This song is regarded as (arguably) the most difficult jazz song to play. In the song he has a solo that completely annihilates his piano player McCoy Tyner. Tyner was chosen to play this song because he was regarded, at the time, as one of the best improvisational pianists out there. When you listen to the song, you can hear him struggling to keep up. Coltrane just floats in and out of his solo and hammers nails in Tyner's coffin over and over. I have seen sheet music that notates Coltranes solo, and it is hard to read while the song is going on, much less play. It is genius (imho).
Anyway, someone asked Coltrane about how fluid and perfect his solo is on such a difficult (and fast) chord progression. Apparently he laughed and said that what most people don't understand was that he had been practising that solo for two years while he was composing the song. That would explain it. My point is that if this is a Sonny original, he should be able to take anyone to school in a showdown. Anybody except Esteban maybe![]()

Always striving to play exactly what you hear in your head. Also there's a conversation that SRV has on one recording right before he plays Lenny I think where he basically says the same thing. He got in trouble when he tried to think about what he was playing as it was happening. He tried to turn off his brain and just let it flow. It must have been nice. PR "All Music is the Blues. Well put......
I tried to explain this to my nephew once and the closest I came up with is that at times the guitar feels like an extension of the body. Kind of a symbiotic relationship. I think I like magic better. |

Tommie wrote:Symbiotic relationship some will understand. and I think this is correct. I would suggest magic because every one will understand. After all, in my mind it is magic because I didn't plan it but somehow I ended up there and had to shake my head and laughing to myself because others that are listening will be thinking now that was a cool riff I wonder how he worked that out. Truth be told I have no idea therefore it must be magic because it just happened when I wasn't thinking about it. In a way it is much like your faith. You just have certain beliefs that can not be reproduced empirically but something happens and you say that was a sign of... It magic it just happens and you feel good with it. Again my analogy is faith in something or some power and all of a sudden you get a sign in my case I play something that I don't know what it was and I most likely could not reproduce it if I tried but it happened and I accept it much like I accept my faith. In my case it's not magic...more of a miracle.
Rags, Tommie and Tele, really been enjoying the discussion in this thread, thanks guys for sharing some of the insight. Tommie which of our sons was this nephew? "You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me." ~ C.S. Lewis |

My wife said that she really liked what I was doing and asked me what it was. I stopped for a second and thought about it and it was gone. I couldn't play whatever it was today if I had to. It would take some serious deep relaxation, or hypnosis to get it back. I think this is why I play in the first place. The place you go when you are tuned in is what makes the practice and frustration worth it. At least it is to me. PR "All Music is the Blues. All of it!" --- George Carlin |

I have heard a lot about those Tele, mostly very good. Are they easy to use?

Yes.
As its a small unit (a little bigger than a classic ipod) it can be a tiny bit difficult to remember exactly what to do to get you where you want to be. But the display is fantastic; large and well lit. You will have no issues. I generally keep mine set up to record from the built in mic, (which incidentally sounds way better than it should) and all I have to do is power it up,and push the record button. It's already paid for itself ten fold, just saving ideas I would have forgotten. Cant really measure that value can you? If any of you pull the trigger on this, make sure and get the AC adaptor. Worth its weight in gold. <edit> I should have mentioned it also has a built in drum machine, metronome of course, something like 80 different effects, and a tuner that's not half bad. It allows you to upload files (USB) to your computer,(wav.) and it will also convert your final mix to mp3. AD conversion is 24 bit. But that's not really important. Is it? When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me."

I need to get one of those. I can't tell you how many magic moments I've lost. That micro BR might save my sanity.
