Looks like some of the high end bowl back classical mandolins!
I count 10 tuners, like a cittern?
Elrod's :
Mandolins; Breedlove Cascade; Victoria, B&J New York ; Washburn 215 bowl back, cr.1906-07; Flatiron by Gibson pancake(in hospital for neck surgery). Guitar: Guild D-25NT. |

I am not a guitar expert at all, but a 10-string? I know that Nikos Apollonio is renowned for his Cittern building. Are we sure that it isn't a Cittern?
Either way it is cool. Are their photos available that show the rest?
Thanks Mac! |

Hello,
From what I understand, an "English guitar" is a type of cittern. Please see the below links. English Guitar - Wikipedia Portugese Guitar - Wikipedia |

Michael Tognetti wrote:So did I! I received that picture from Nikos, but didn't really know what an English Guitar (or a Portugese guitar) was, so I did a Google search, and good ol' Wikipedia came through. He sent some more pictures to me, which I'll post tomorrow. |

Here's the information from Nikos, along with more pictures.
"The instrument was made tuned FCfcf' with octaves on the bass. Western Cedar top, arched with the bracing; walnut body and neck with a purpleheart center lamination in the neck; the head inlay is Goncalo Alves framed w. ebony & maple--moon is antique ivory as are the fretboard inlays, and stars are brass wire. The bridge has my signature saddle and hold down, with the tailpiece equipped with little movable bridges to tune the after string lengths 2 octaves above the open tuning. Symp. resonance. Very nice looking but not as deep and powerful as the regular bell shape. The corners or shoulders on the sides are copied from an English guittar dated 1792, restored by Art Robb."

Very interesting and beautiful instrument it is. And I know someone who will enjoy the heck out of that soundhole.

That is sweet. Soundhole and all! Does Nikos have a web site (I was unable to find one) with some sound clips?

Fingerpicker wrote: I agree with fing. I understand what it really is, but it looks like a "Mando Guitar" to me. Also looks expensive. Look closely at that top and the rest of the instrument. I'm not a big fan of the style, but I have to give the luthier his due. I'd really be interested to hear it. Guitars; Esteban -"Tribute to Paula Abdul L.E." Made more for curiosity and fun; not expensive but the next one will be more so. Simple is better, one concentrates on the sound and action rather than getting
distracted by hours of inlays etc. I like the sound of this but you should hear the big ones (DAdad etc.). Actually you can, I can attach mp3's to emails.

Welcome Nikos. I think that starting out as fun and curiosity is probably the best way to begin.
