Parlor Posts: 1 November 4, 2009 12:27:13	Tags : None Hi all. I'm finally taking my AD200/SM in for a setup after having it for a couple of years. I'm considering replacing the stock saddle with TUSQ or bone based on what I've read online recently. Any strong feelings out there one way or another? Oh, also curious as to what picks people are using. I bought a bunch of Dunlop mediums a long time ago but I'm now looking for a little variety. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks! Jim

0M Posts: 771 November 4, 2009 13:07:19 Ask BGMF moderator	I have to tell you, if you asked me a year or so ago, I would have said bone, hands down. This year I put a FWI saddle in a couple of my acoustics, and after doing some recording, I think it is the way to go. IMHO it adds depth but not shrill to the treble and mids, and cleans up and helps produce what I would call a more focused bass. Put aside all the musings about the age and what not of the FWI, and just listen. I did, and now I'm a convert. As far as picks go, I think you find the shape that fits your hand and style of playing, and then try as many different materials as you can find it in. For me, the thicker the better. I don't like pick noise, and I HATE the "playing card in the bicycle spokes" slap. Just my opinion though. "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. I put a bone saddle in my Martin about a year ago, and I have been really happy with the results. As far as the pick question, I also don't have an opinion, sorry. 00 Posts: 117 November 4, 2009 19:29:56	Buy a bunch of different picks...size, shpe, material, and thickness. You'll be amazed at how much difference a pick makes in your sound. I use different ones depending on what I'm doing and the sound I want.

I do like Dunlop medium, the grey ones. they just work. I have FWI and micarta and whatevernot. My whatevernot sounds fine. sae some dough if you like. picks are cheap. Those Red Bear tortise are sweet for a mellow sound. Tele is an engineer. He is smart about his choices so you can't go wrong if you like to blow some bucksssss. Maybe not an engineer but close to it; he has an EAR! FPick has common sense out the ying yang and you can't go wrong with him too. Just personal gut call here. Don't fret, it's all good friend. I have the Atlas C25 black magic that I had set up, I also installed a bone saddle which I bought from a supplier that I found in this sight. The saddle came mostly finished and made for the Atlas series guitars. I go my local guitar cener and play all the high end guitars there and I have to tell you I love coming home to my Breedlove. The bone saddle was a great investment.

Slope Shoulder Posts: 2054 November 8, 2009 11:40:29 Northwest Lounge moderator	I put bone in a Taylor and really noticed a difference from what it came with. I would like to try FWI but haven't yet. I can tell you Tele knows what he is talking about and if he had bone and has gone to FWI that makes me think about getting the FWI the next time. I'm a fingerpicker and use Fred Kelly thumbpicks the speed pick type and I have seen some strummers using them also. ragtime man

I admittedly was a skeptic of the "bone" upgrade and couldn't justify the expense of a piece of bone or an even more expensive material like FWI. After investigating and asking questions of people who made the change, I decided to upgrade the micarta stock on my AC25/SR to bone and am completely satisfied with the results. I ordered a custom fit from Bob Colosi and it came to me within 2 days from Georgia to Colorado. He got right on my order. It took at least 3 hours of sanding and installation time, but the end result was a more responsive top, especially regarding harmonic dynamics and shimmering trebles, and even more sustain than I thought imaginable from a concert bodied guitar. I use fingers, and am trying to learn (or should I say re-learn) the rhythmic styles of Ross and Dufour with Fred Kelly Bumblebees. Not sure what I think of em yet, but they sure are more comfortable than the Dunlop thumbpick (the white ones) I first tried.

I haven't gotten the hang of those dunlops either. I was cutting down the Fred Kelly speedpicks, but lately have been happy with them without any changes.
