Breedlove guitar "sticky/tacky" finish |
Lead | ||

After my Breedlove SD/W guitar sat in my closet unused, in its case, for an extended period, I discovered its finish became "sticky/tacky" to the
touch. A dealer told me there was a period in the late '90s (when my guitar was made) when Breedlove experienced some problems with its guitar finishes.
Have others had problems similar to mine, and, if so, does anyone have any information on the cause and the remedy for this problem?

First I ever heard of that, but there's a first for everything. Anyone else?

New one on me too. Perhaps a quick email to Breedlove might be in order?

Thanks. I have already e-mailed Breedlove and am awaiting a reply. I am interested in knowing of any others who've experienced my problem and what
they've done to remedy it. In my e-mail, I also asked Breedlove for suggestions regarding a remedy.

They're good about customer service, so expect a prompt reply. I'm sure we'll all be interested in the answers.

I have had the same problem on my late 90's Breedlove. I kept the guitar in the case for an extended period of time and the finish became sticky/tacky on
the entire finish not just certian areas. I cleaned the guitar relieved it would come clean but after putting the guitar back in the case a week later the
sticky/tacky would return. I stoped using the case and it would return but not as bad untill it stoped. I think something used in the guitar case lining is
attacking the finish that is my best guess. Have you heard anything from Breedlove??

I have read about this, but cannot remember where it was addressed. As I remember it guits made in and around 94 and 95 were subject to this. Perhaps I am
wrong about the years. Both of my 97's have no issues with this and are stored in their cases. As I recall it is/was a finish problem relating to the
actual finish degrading over time. Regardless sticky/tacky is not good on a guit and hopefully Breedlove can help you out with it. I would call them and find
out. Let us know the outcome. Most likely any warranty work would only be done if you are the original owner. But if you are not the original owner and the
guit is a good one it would be worth the $$$ to get it refinished.
Come on guys, surely someone on this site knows more about this issue than I do. Speak up! Anyways good luck svt and keep us informed. "I had been playing single note instruments and I wanted to hear a guitar played as a piano." Leo Kottke

This is the first I have heard of the problem. I, like others, will be interested in what Breedlove has to say about this and what they offer to do if you are
the original owner.

I haven't thought about this problem with my Breedlove in several months. I e-mailed Breedlove back in March and gave them the serial number (which
indicated manufacture in '96) and asked them for general information about the guitar, and described the problem I had with the finish. Their reply, from
Devin Percell in Customer Service, said many of the early records have been either lost or destroyed, but based on the serial number, indicated my guitar was
in the S series which were hand made in the custom shop in Bend, Oregon. Since he never mentioned the sticky/tacky finish problem I experienced, I e-mailed him
back, still asking for a reply in this regard, and also mentioned a dealer had told me he had read somewhere that Breedlove had experienced a problem with
finishes on some of their guitars produced about the time of production of my instrument. I never got a reply, so I pretty much gave up. I took my guitar in to
the dealer and had him clean it. He mentioned that Breedlove was unlikely to do anything about it, since I wasn't the original owner (I had bought it used,
on consignment, in '98). I still store the guitar in its original case, taking it out to play every couple of weeks or so. Fortunately, the sticky/tacky
feeling hasn't returned, but since the cleaning, the finish doesn't look quite the same, appearing a little blotchy in a couple of spots. Thankfully,
the guitar still plays fine, producing a full and rich sound. I guess I'm somewhat disappointed that Breedlove didn't respond to my query concerning
the finish, particularly since I never told them I wasn't the original owner. Maybe they just didn't want to admit that they once had this problem.

I am wondering if a quick run of naptha on all of the wood wouldn't be a bad idea to get rid of all old waxes and buildup and then put a coat of one good
non-silicone wax on like Virtuoso or something. Or no wax for a month just to see how the naptha helps. I do this one everything after a few years of owning a
guitar. It's a bigger job but prevents weird buildups. Be careful with the naptha cloths afetr you are done, they are highly flammable. make sure you let
them air dry outside on the cement or somewheres safe-like! Use rubber gloves too. Good ventilation is necessary as well.
I would check out Frank Ford's views at Frets.com on using naptha and this thread over at the AGF from the last few days as well before using just bring yourself up to speed if you decide to try it.
